“Women, Fashion, and the Fashion Industry in the Interwar Period (France, Great Britain, Belgium)”, Apparence(s) [Online], 7 | 2017, published online on June 1, 2017

In 2017, the journal Apparence(s) published its 7th issue, dedicated to the relationship between women and fashion during the interwar period of the 20th century, edited by Sophie Kurkdjian. While not offering an exhaustive study of the history of fashion and women during the interwar period (the editors would have liked to explore men’s fashion, or fashion in film and literature), this issue addresses previously unexplored themes from the period (training in fashion schools, female workers at Jean Patou, the rise of cosmetics), as well as more common themes that have been reexamined using previously unpublished archival material (the French “garçonne” as seen in the press, sportswear, and international exhibitions)—monographic studies on a single fashion designer or magazine, or those that are too general in their approach to the history of haute couture, have been deliberately excluded.
