Fashion Through the Centuries — Delve into the heart of ancient Rome, where appearance was a true marker of social and political status. You’ll discover the Romans’ sometimes surprising beauty secrets – dyes made from goat’s fat and sulphur to achieve golden hair, curling irons for men, meticulous hair removal… – and understand how the complex draping of the toga alone conveyed rank and morality. Through a mix of conquest and trade, you’ll see the influence of Eastern, Celtic and Germanic civilisations on Roman dress, right up to the adoption of breeches by legionaries and gladiators, foreshadowing a shift towards greater practicality.
Fashion in the 16th century — Astrid Castres, a textile historian specialising in the history of embroidery in the Middle Ages and the 16th century, and a senior lecturer at the École Pratique des Hautes Études, holding the chair in ‘Sources and Methods of the History of Fashion from the Middle Ages to the 19th Century’, reflects on her research into the history of clothing and fashion through the lens of techniques, textiles and the various crafts of the period, and also tells us about the changes in the way people dressed between the 13th and the early 17th centuries.
Researching the history of fashion — Isabelle Paresys is a senior lecturer and researcher at the Institut de Recherche du Septentrion. She has been working for over 10 years on clothing styles from the 16th to the 18th centuries, with a particular focus on Renaissance fashion. She was the academic curator of the exhibition ‘Plein les yeux: The Spectacle of Fashion’ at the Cité Internationale de la Dentelle et de la Mode in Calais.
